How To Have Good Mental Health – It is safe to say that nearly everyone wants to experience good mental health. But sometimes it can feel as though that is easier said than done. If you have poor mental health, improving it can seem like an impossible task—and to be sure, it isn’t easy to overcome personal mental health struggles. But the good news is that there are small steps you can take that can build a good mental health routine and help to promote positive changes in your life. At Horizon Plymouth, we often help our clients to build a good mental health routine as part of our work with them.

How to build a good mental health routine

Because everyone is so different, with individual motivators and challenges that create unique ways of solving problems and creating solutions, there is not one singular routine that will magically cure poor mental health. The trick to creating a good mental health routine is analyzing your strengths, goals, and weaknesses and creating a plan that harnesses all elements in the most efficient manner. The following are some very simple changes that you can consider implementing in order to start changing your mental health routine from the inside out.

  • Spend reflective time alone: Removing all screens, devices, and distractions and spending some time alone with your thoughts can help you to evaluate elements of your life that might not be so easy to tackle.
  • Focus on sleep routines: Often people fail to appreciate how important sleep is for overall mental health. Spending time focusing on improving the quality of your sleep can help you to see immediate positive changes in your overall mental health. Common sleep routine strategies include going to bed at the same time every night, removing screens, lights, and other distractions from your room, and only going to bed when you are ready to sleep—no eating or lounging in bed!
  • Be sure to eat good meals: Similar to the advice above, being sure to eat three healthy, balanced meals a day can go a long way to improving your overall mental health. It is important that the meal includes a variety of food groups, as well as plenty of protein to keep you full and fuel your brain and body.
  • Work movement into your day: Moving your body stimulates the production of beneficial hormones that can help to provide a positive boost to your overall mental health. This doesn’t have to mean sweating it out in the gym if that isn’t your style! It could be as simple as going for a gentle walk or participating in an at-home yoga class.
  • Spend time with others: Just as spending some time alone to reflect on yourself with no distractions can promote positive mental health, so, too, can spending time with others. Getting out of the house to go to a park or to grab dinner with a friend can provide vital social stimulation.
